ZNZ PhD Retreat 2017

The 19th ZNZ PhD Retreat at the clinic Valens aimed at stimulating exchange between science and the clinic. Part of the program was dedicated to Prof. Jürg Kesselring’s upcoming retirement on September 1. In his farewell lecture, he talked about his 30 year experience in the clinic.

The retreat opened on May 18 with a plenary lecture by Prof. Gerd Kempermann, TU Dresden and Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen (DZNE) on neural plasticity.

On the following days the 53 participating PhD students all presented their work in multiple sessions.

The guided tour through the Neurorehabilitation Clinic and the patient presentations by Prof. Kesselring, chief physician at the Valens Clinic, brought the students closer to the patients and possible solutions developed for these patients by the Valens team. Participating students confirm that this type practical demonstration motivates them in their daily work.

The retreat ended on May 20 with the farewell lecture by Prof. Kesselring in which he talked about his experiences of 30 years in the clinic, entitled: “Neurorehabilitation in MS: 30 years trying to shape & melt theory & practice”.

On the occasion of the farewell, Prof. Fritjof Helmchen and Prof. Kesselring played a duet on the cello.
