Welcome to the ZNZ

The Neuroscience Center Zurich welcomes its new members.

New ZNZ research group leaders:

PD Dr. med. Mira Katan Kahles
Department of Neurology, University Hospital Zurich

Issue8_New_members_Katan_150x150Dr. Katan identifies (using OMICS-methods) and validates (conducting clinical studies and trials) diagnostic blood biomarkers to improve risk stratification and clinical decision-making in cerebrovascular diseases. The ultimate goal is to optimize patient care and improve the outcome as well as the allocation of health care resources. More

Prof. Dr. Sascha Frühholz
Department of Psychology, University of Zurich

Issue8_New_members_Fruhholz_150x150The research group of Prof. Frühholz focuses on the cognitive, psychological and neural processes that underlie the processing of visual, auditory and emotional stimuli. The group uses a variety of psychological and neuroscientific methods such as fMRI, EEG, iEEG, TMS, NIRS, psychoacoustic hearing experiments, acoustic voice recordings and voice analysis. More

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Fatih Yanik
Dept. of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, ETH Zurich

Issue8_New_members_Yanik_150x150Prof. Yanik uses advanced high-throughput technologies for investigating and engineering the complex function, reprogramming, and regeneration of the nervous system in vitro and in vivo. His group employs various methodologies including microfluidics, microrobotics, ultrafast optics/microscopy, tissue engineering, drug delivery, neuronal stem cell reprogramming, genetics, and RNA/polymer biochemistry to study neurological disorders and diseases.

New ZNZ junior research group leaders

Dr. Johannes Bohacek
Brain Research Institute, University of Zurich

Issue8_New_members_Bohacek_150x150Dr. Bohacek is interested in understanding the organism-wide consequences of stress, and how the complex stress-response leads to changes in behavior and increases the risk for neuropsychiatric disease. His group uses optogenetic, transcriptomic, pharmacologic, epigenetic and behavioral approaches combined with assisted reproductive techniques. More

Dr. Michael Pfeiffer
Institute of Neuroinformatics, University of Zurich and ETH Zurich

Issue8_New_members_Pfeiffer_150x150Dr. Pfeiffer concentrates on spiking deep neural networks, an important model for building neuromorphic hardware to emulate specific functionalities of the mammalian brain. The goal of his research is to investigate similarities between brain function and deep neural network models, and transform this into technology for low-latency and low-power sensory processing and cognitive functions for artificial software and robotic agents. PD Dr. Dr. med. Cornelia Hagmann
Dept. of Neonatology, University Hospital Zurich

Issue8_New_members_Hagmann_150x150Preterm infants are vulnerable to brain injury. Five to 10% of the survivors develop cerebral palsy and 40–50% develop cognitive and behavioral deficits. Dr. Hagmann’s research focuses on reducing brain injury in preterm infants in various projects: with neuroprotective agents such as erythropoietin, with creative music therapy and in another project with NIRS oximetry. PD Dr. sc. nat. Karin Kucian
Center for MR-Research, University Children’s Hospital Zurich

Issue8_New_members_Kucian_150x150Dr. Kucian’s research interests in neuroscience lie in developmental neuropsychology, in particular with emphasis on neuronal correlates of number processing and calculation in children and the effects of specific learning disorders, like developmental dyscalculia. She is also an active member of the BrainFair Zurich Task Force. More
