Functional Genomics Center

Tackling today’s life sciences questions requires the use of highly specialized technologies and expertise. Researchers in Zurich profit from the support of the Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) that provides a broad range of “omics” capabilities.

One of the big advantages of doing research in Zurich is the access to a unique number of facilities that help move research forward. The Functional Genomics Center Zurich, led by Director Prof. Ralph Schlapbach, is a key contributor to the success of Zurich’s research. Since its opening in 2002, the joint research and technology center of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich offers research and training platforms on Genomics, Transcriptomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics and Bioinformatics.

More than 2000 researchers from ETH and UZH plus external Universities and industry actively use the FGCZ. Each year, 250 research projects are initiated, with more than 500 currently active projects. The FGCZ employs a staff of 40 experts in molecular biology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, informatics, computer science, and physics that offer support via analytical services, user lab access including training, and teaching courses on analytical technologies and bioinformatics strategies.

The Functional Genomics Center uses the very latest, state-of-the art technologies to contribute to unravelling the complexity of the cell machinery. “From the analysis of the raw and transcribed genetic material to the functions of proteins and metabolites, we offer the research community our support in the investigation of a broad spectrum of problems using the holistic “-omics” paradigm”, says Prof. Schlapbach. “Such an approach, with the invaluable support of bioinformatics, has proven to represent a formidable asset in dissecting the several layers constituting the primary building blocks of life.”
