Why do we feel pain, when can pain become chronic and what treatments are available? This year’s BrainFair is all about pain. From 12-17 March, experts review the field in panel discussions and presentations. With topics such as understanding pain and visualization of pain in the clinic, the BrainFair offers an attractive program for a broad public audience.
Pain is probably the most common reason for visiting the family doctor. This vital warning signal of the body represents a subjective and therefore individually very different sensory perception ranging from noticeable to unbearable. When pain becomes chronic, the function of warning is lost and quality of life is significantly impaired. Increasingly more people suffer from chronic pain, which is now recognized as an independent disease and treated accordingly.
The BrainFair 2018 highlights the topic from different perspectives and shows how and why pain develops and what treatments exist. In the context of lectures and discussion forums not only physical, but also mental and emotional pain is addressed by experts from the University of Zurich, University Hospital Zurich, ETH and invited guests. During the entire week graphical illustrations of pain, as used in clinical practice, will be exhibited outside the lecture hall.
School program
As part of the BrainFair, each year a program is organized for school classes, where researchers from the ZNZ will speak on various topics related to brain research. The program is highly popular and attracted registrations from 30 school classes with several hundred pupils.
“This year, the BrainFair will present an even more attractive program, addressing not only key aspects but also offering new and surprising perspectives on the subject of pain”, says Mick Lehmann, member of the organizing committee. “I think that the dialogue between the public, scientists and practicing clinicians on such a relevant topic is important and will be highly appreciated by all parties”.
